- Locate the Roof Leak
You should start at the ceiling stain and work your way up. Use a flashlight and a ladder to access the attic. Then, visually trace a line that runs up to the roof. - Remove the old roofing paper
You can separate the roofing deck from the shingles using roofing paper or synthetic underlayment. The utility knife can be used to remove the paper and underlayment. You should keep as much of the paper intact as possible.
- Mark the Deck Cut Area
Take a chalk line and trace it down the roof beams on the right and left sides of the damaged roof deck. Snap the line at the center of each rafter. As a guide, use existing nails to locate the rafter’s center.

Adjust the depth of the circular saw blade to match the thickness and an additional 1/16-inch. Cut the damaged area of the roof deck using the chalk lines. Make sure you don’t kneel on the section marked off when cutting.
