Instructions

  1. Locate the Roof Leak

You should start at the ceiling stain and work your way up. Use a flashlight and a ladder to access the attic. Then, visually trace a line that runs up to the roof. The leak could be located a few feet above the roofline, towards the roof ridge. The location of the leak on the roof deck could be stained black, white, or may have mold and mildew.

Roof vents are a common source of roof leaks. Roof vents may include attic fans and turbines as well as plumbing soil stack pipe pipes and any other metal flashing above the roofline. Sometimes, the source of a roof leak may be damaged plywood roof decking (also known as sheathing).

  1. Roof Vents – Take a look

If the leak originates from the roof vents then return to the roof and inspect the condition. The boots and housings might have become cracked. Vents may be loose or missing. Look for missing or damaged nails that attach to the vents and roof.

  1. Take down damaged roof vent

The roof vent should be removed from the roof. The pry bar can be used to pull the nails from the vent. Next, you will need to remove any shingles that are covering the base. Assisting with the shingles is helpful. Do not remove the roofing shingles. The roof deck vent should be removed by removing the nails. Finally, take the vent out..

  1. Get rid of old roofing tiles

You will need to remove the shingles if the leak is caused by damage to the roof deck.

Slide the pry bar underneath the shingles starting at the bottom and working your way up towards the roof ridge. Start with two rows of shingles just above the intended repair area. Continue working downwards along the rows, prying loosening nails as you pull shingles off.

  1. Remove the old roofing paper

You can separate the roofing deck from the shingles using roofing paper or synthetic underlayment. The utility knife can be used to remove the paper and underlayment. You should keep as much of the paper intact as possible.

  1. Mark the Deck Cut Area

Take a chalk line and trace it down the roof beams on the right and left sides of the damaged roof deck. Snap the line at the center of each rafter. As a guide, use existing nails to locate the rafter’s center.

  1. Take away damaged roof deck

Adjust the depth of the circular saw blade to match the thickness and an additional 1/16-inch. Cut the damaged area of the roof deck using the chalk lines. Make sure you don’t kneel on the section marked off when cutting.

  1. Take off Roof Deck

To remove nails from roof deck sections that have been cut out, use the prybar. You can then remove the damaged plywood, but don’t throw it away.

  1. New Roof Deck Patch

You can use the roof deck’s damaged section as a template and mark the dimensions of your new roof deck patch. You can also place this patch on the ground to ensure safety.
